There are 14 academic schools in West Virginia University, namely, the School of Agriculture, Forestry and Consumer Sciences, the School of Arts and Sciences, the School of Business and Economics, the School of Creativity, the School of Dentistry, the School of Engineering and Mineral Resources, the School of Human Resources and Education, the School of Journalism, the School of Law, the School of Medicine, the School of Nursing, the School of Pharmacy, the School of Physical Education, and the School of Technology. One of the characteristics of the University is the promotion of vocational education. All students are required to obtain 12 credits in the humanities, creative arts, social sciences, natural sciences and mathematics.
In the previous year or two, 10,750 people applied, giving an acceptance rate of 76%. According to former students, the number of applicants has nearly doubled since the mid-1980s, and admission standards have become stricter.
The West Virginia University Mountaineers are a team affiliated with the Big East Conference. In 2010, they won the Big East Conference title under coach Bob Huggins, went to the NCAA Tournament as a No. 2 seed in the East Region, and made it to the Final Four. The West Virginia Mountaineers have won two NIT championships, though they have only one NCAA title in their history.
