1958 Auckland College was renamed the University of Auckland. In 1882, the Parliament of New Zealand passed an Act establishing Auckland College, the legal document governing the founding of the former University of Auckland. The opening ceremony was held on May 21 of the following year, declaring that the school was open to all people, men and women of all classes, and that it was a fully democratic institution. There were four lectures: classical literature, English, mathematics, natural science, chemistry and physics.
