history
Over the last 30 years of the 20th century, Manchester Metropolitan University has undergone consolidation of colleges, some of which were founded in the 19th century. The merger was planned on 1 January 1970, when Manchester College was formed from Manchester College of Art and Design, Manchester College of Business and John Dalton College of Technology. On 1 January 1977, the Junior College merged with Didsbury College of Education and Hollings College, before joining Manchester Higher City College on 1 January 1983.
Originally a sovereign institution, the junior College was converted into a corporate organization on 1 April 1989 under the Education Reform Act 1988. It was subsequently upgraded to university status by the Further Education and Higher Education Act 1992, officially known as Manchester Metropolitan University. The new name was approved by the Privy Council on 15 September 1992.
The school continued to expand, becoming part of the Crewe and Alsager College of Higher Education on 2 October 1992 and the Manchester College of Biological Sciences becoming a College of Social Care and Health in 2003. The original Alsager school site has been closed and all the land has been sold with the proceeds going to the development fund of the new Crewe School.
