Northern Virginia Community College, consisting of several campuses in Northern Virginia, including six campuses and two learning centers, is the second largest multi-campus community college in the United States and the largest school of education in Virginia. In 2003-04, the college enrolled 63,000 full-time students and 250,000 part-time students. With international students from more than 180 countries, the College is the largest source of international students in the United States.
All books are purchased from the Library of Virginia, which means that the College has the same resources as other universities and colleges in Virginia. Accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, the college offers more than 160 programs and awards degrees at the associate level. The College’s Extended Education Department also provides distance learning and its Career Development Department provides continuing education for in-service personnel.
Southwest Virginia Community College (Richland) is located on the outskirts of Richland, Virginia, on the border of Tazwell and Russell. It is one of 23 colleges in the Virginia Community College. Southwest Virginia Community College (Richland) opened in 1968 and was originally open to residents of Buchanan, Russell, and Tazwell counties. Southwest Virginia Community College (Richland) is also partially open to residents of Dickenson County. The college has an estimated enrollment of over 4,000 students.
