Founded in 1451, the University of Glasgow is a prestigious public comprehensive university with a history of nearly 600 years and the second longest in Scotland and the fourth longest in the United Kingdom. It has been ranked as one of the world’s top 80 best universities by the British Times and the U.S. News over the years.
The University of Glasgow was a public university recommended by King James II of Scotland and founded by Pope Nicholas V in 1451 AD. The University of Glasgow is one of the four oldest universities in the United Kingdom and one of the ten oldest universities in the world.
The university enjoys a high international reputation and has been selected as one of the world’s top 100 universities for many years (QS 2012 ranking 59th, QS 2013 ranking 54th). The University of Glasgow has one of the most comprehensive academic programmes in the UK, with teaching and research covering all fields of current science and an outstanding reputation in almost all subjects. Lonely Planet, one of the world’s best-known travel brochures, commissioned a “Study Glasgow” guidebook for the University of Glasgow in 2008 and republished in 2011.
