In 1848, in the New South Wales Legislative Council, William Wentworth, a graduate of Cambridge University, and Charles Nicholson, a medical graduate of Edinburgh University’s medical school, proposed a plan to expand the existing Sydney College into a larger university. Wentworth believed that a secular university in a nation was necessary for the growth of a society that aspires to autonomy, and would give children of every class a chance to become great and useful in the destiny of the nation.

After two lobbying sessions with Wentworth’s representatives, the plan was adopted. The University of Sydney Act was agreed by Sir Charles Fitzroy on 24 September 1850, passed, and formally established on 1 October 1850. Two years later, on 11 October 1852, the University’s main classroom, based on what is now Sydney Grammar School, was officially opened.

The first principal was John Woolley, and the first professor of chemistry and physics experiments was John Smith. On February 27, 1858, the University received a Royal Charter from Queen Victoria, allowing the awarding of university degrees, some of which are recognized and accepted by British universities. In 1859, the University moved to Camperdown, a suburb of Sydney, where it has remained as its main campus
